RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian filmmaker Edwin is set to bring his latest work,
Monster Pabrik Rambut (Sleep No More), to the global stage with its world premiere at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) this February. The film will screen in the festival’s Special Midnight program, a showcase dedicated to bold genre cinema. The announcement follows the release of the film’s first international trailer on YouTube on Friday, January 16.
“I’m grateful to present my new film at Berlinale, and honored that this marks the third time one of my feature films has been shown here,” Edwin said in a statement from Jakarta on Saturday, January 17, 2026, as quoted by
Antara. This latest entry continues Edwin’s longstanding relationship with Berlinale. His second feature,
Kebun Binatang (Postcards from the Zoo, 2012), competed in the festival’s Main Competition, while Aruna & Lidahnya (Aruna & Her Palate, 2018) was featured in the Culinary Cinema program. His short film Trip to the Wound (2008) was also screened at Berlinale in 2009.The Special Midnight section is one of Berlinale’s four special programs, spotlighting films that explore horror, thriller, science fiction, and cult classics. Designed for late-night audiences, it offers a platform for unsettling, eccentric, and suspenseful storytelling.
Edwin’s new film fits squarely within that tradition. The trailer depicts the bleak atmosphere of PT Raga Abadi, a factory where workers suffer from physical exhaustion.
It hints at a tragic incident involving the mother of Putri (played by Rachel Amanda), raising suspicions that such events are not isolated. Factory management attributes these tragedies to suicide or workplace accidents, but Putri, joined by Ida (Lutesha), suspects a supernatural force at play.
As tensions rise, management announces a 20 percent increase in overtime pay, even as workers confess to feeling their bodies controlled by mysterious forces. The company insists these sensations are merely the effects of sleep deprivation, denying any paranormal presence.
Producer Meiske Taurisia emphasized that Berlinale participation marks the film’s first step in reaching international audiences.
The project is a co-production between Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, Germany, and France, supported by institutions including the Singapore Film Commission, Berlinale World Cinema Fund, Visions Sud Est, Aide aux cinémas du monde, Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture, and the Education Fund Management Agency (LPDP) of the Ministry of Finance.
The screenplay was co-written by Edwin, acclaimed Indonesian novelist Eka Kurniawan, and Japanese filmmaker Daishi Matsunaga. International distribution will be handled by South Korea’s Showbox.
Alongside Rachel Amanda and Lutesha, the cast features musicians Iqbaal Ramadhan and Sal Priadi, renowned dancer Didik Nini Thowok, and social media creator Luqman Hakim (Kev). The film is scheduled for theatrical release in Indonesia in 2026.
Edwin is no stranger to international recognition. He won the prestigious Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival in 2021 with
Seperti Dendam, Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas (Vengeance is Mine, All Others Pay Cash). His debut feature,
Babi Buta yang Ingin Terbang (Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly), earned the FIPRESCI Award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, while his film Posesif (Possessive, 2017) won Best Director at the Indonesian Film Festival. ***
