RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta: Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Dave Laksono, applauded the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' efforts to protect Indonesian citizens in Iran. He noted that 386 Indonesian citizens in Iran are currently safe.
According to him, the safety of Indonesian citizens (WNI) is always a top priority. "We support the government's efforts to prioritize the protection of Indonesian citizens. Their safety is always a top priority," he said on Saturday, January 17, 2026.
However, if the situation in Iran becomes more dangerous, the government will take strong action. One of these measures is to issue an evacuation order for all Indonesian citizens in Iran.
He said that all steps will be carried out through full coordination between the central government and the Indonesian representative in Iran. This is to ensure the safety of Indonesian citizens.
"The evacuation option must be considered seriously with full coordination. This coordination involves the Indonesian government and the Indonesian representative in Iran," he emphasized.
He added that the government's current position emphasizes the importance of caution and diplomacy. One way to achieve this is by maintaining good diplomatic relations and adhering to the principle of non-intervention.
"Indonesia must be firm in protecting its national interests. However, it must remain diplomatic in responding to political dynamics in other countries," Dave said.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Indonesian citizens in Iran are currently safe. The Ministry said that the demonstrations in Iran have not affected the Indonesian citizens.
"Based on reports from the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran, the Indonesian citizens are safe. The majority are students and were not affected by the ongoing demonstrations," said Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Vahd Nabyl in a press statement received by RRI on Saturday, January 17, 2026.
He confirmed that the embassy continues to communicate with Indonesian citizens. Nabyl acknowledged that communication has been difficult due to internet restrictions imposed by the Iranian government.
"The embassy continues to communicate with these citizens, though regular communication has been difficult since January 12 due to internet restrictions," he said. (Misni Parjiati/Bambang MBKA)
