Indonesia and UK Strengthen Strategic Ties Amid Shifting Geopolitics

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and the United Kingdom are preparing to formalize a new strategic partnership, with British Ambassador to Indonesia Dominic Jermey confirming that the agreement will be a key outcome of President Prabowo Subianto’s meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London.

In a video statement monitored in Jakarta on Monday, January 19, 2026, Jermey recalled that during their last meeting in London, the two leaders agreed to launch a bilateral strategic cooperation framework.

“This is the key document to be unveiled this time, covering sectors such as defense and security, economic growth - which is a priority for both leaders - society, as well as climate, energy, and nature,” Jermey said as quoted by

Antara.

The ambassador emphasized the importance of the partnership, noting that the United Kingdom is the world’s sixth-largest economy while Indonesia ranks 16th. Yet, he pointed out, Indonesia is only Britain’s 54th-largest export partner, far below the potential of both economies.

To address this gap, one of the agendas during President Prabowo’s visit will be a dialog between British business representatives and Indonesian counterparts to explore export opportunities, Jermey added.

He further noted that amid increasingly complex geopolitical challenges, Prime Minister Starmer is focusing on building growth opportunities with global partners, including Indonesia. The strategic partnership, Jermey said, will also be highlighted by PM Starmer at the upcoming World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.

Beyond economic cooperation, Ambassador Jermey said President Prabowo will explore educational collaboration through talks with the Russell Group, an association of leading UK universities, to discuss the possibility of opening campuses in Indonesia.

Prabowo is also scheduled to meet philanthropic representatives to discuss post-disaster recovery efforts in Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra, as well as elephant conservation initiatives supported directly by King Charles III.

President Prabowo Subianto arrived at London Stansted Airport on Sunday, January 18. His agenda in London includes meetings with Prime Minister Starmer and later with King Charles III. ***
