RRI.CO.ID, North Lombok – The Indonesian Hajj and Umrah Minister, Mochamad Irfan Yusuf, conducted a field visit to the Jugil Gangga Date Orchard in North Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), on Saturday, January 17, 2026. The visit aimed to map the potential of local date cultivation as a strategic component of the national Hajj economic ecosystem.
The Minister, popularly known as Gus Irfan, lauded the successful cultivation efforts in North Lombok. He noted that the region holds significant promise as a pioneer for national date self-sufficiency, aligning with President Prabowo Subianto's vision of food sovereignty.
"This is evidence that we do not always have to rely on imports for dates. North Lombok can serve as a prime example of how self-sufficiency begins at the regional level," remarked Gus Irfan.
He emphasized that the Hajj and Umrah Ministry is currently developing a specialized digital platform for Hajj souvenirs. The platform is designed to alleviate the logistical burden on pilgrims, ensuring they are no longer encumbered by heavy luggage when returning from the Holy Land.
"I have instructed the Directorate General for the Development of the Hajj Economic Ecosystem (Ditjen PPEH) to prepare a souvenir platform. Pilgrims can place orders via their devices before they return or even before they depart, whether for dates, nuts, or prayer beads. By the time the pilgrims arrive home, their souvenirs will have already been delivered," he explained.
According to Gus Irfan, this scheme is not merely about convenience, but also a vital instrument for national economic growth. By prioritizing domestic products, particularly from regions like NTB, the government aims to ensure that capital circulation remains within the Indonesian economy.
"The goal is for pilgrims to no longer feel the need to buy dates in Saudi Arabia. We will optimize production from NTB and other provinces. This ensures money circulates among our own people while offering more competitive prices," he added.
Local administration officials welcomed the initiative. The introduction of a digital platform and distribution support is seen as a major opportunity for local farmers to enter the high-volume Hajj supply chain. North Lombok dates are now projected to become a signature commodity within the national Hajj economic ecosystem.
"This is the concrete realization of self-sufficiency, starting from the regions to serve the national interest," concluded Gus Irfan. (Annaila Azzahra/Bambang MBKA)
