Indonesia Calls For Sustainable Water Governance In Berlin

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian delegation called for the strengthening of sustainable water governance to support global food systems during the 2026 Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) in Berlin, Germany, held from January 14 to 17, 2026.

This international conference brought together decision-makers and experts to address critical global agricultural and food policy challenges under the theme "Water. Harvests. Our Future."

Deputy for Food Affordability and Security Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Food, Nani Hendiarti, made the call in her capacity as Head of the Indonesian Delegation, together with Deputy for Food and Agriculture Business Coordination, Widiastuti, representing Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan at the 18th Berlin Agriculture Ministers’ Conference, which served as the pinnacle of the GFFA series.

"This forum emphasizes that food security and water security are two things that cannot be separated," Nani stated in an official release received in Jakarta on Monday, January 19, 2026, as quoted by

Antara.

During the strategic session, Indonesia highlighted the urgency of wise water management as a vital key for the future of agriculture, particularly for climate-vulnerable nations.

The forum gathered 61 agriculture ministers and 14 high-level representatives from international organizations to reach a consensus on integrated water resource management.

"Water unites us, energy drives innovation, and sustainable food systems provide nutrition for the community while protecting the planet," Nani remarked.

Indonesia's stance aligned with the GFFA 2026 message, which agreed on the necessity of strengthening the agricultural sector's role in international water policy.

The delegation further explained that Indonesia has demonstrated its commitment through irrigation modernization and the adoption of climate technology to support national rice self-sufficiency.

Beyond the ministerial forum, the Indonesian delegation held several bilateral meetings with Agriculture Ministers from countries including Germany, Poland, Brazil, Fiji, and Uzbekistan.

They also met with the United Nations (UN) Special Envoy for Water and private sector representatives such as Bayer, German Water Partnership, Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), and Badische Anilin- & Soda-Fabrik (BASF).

These meetings aimed to strengthen cooperation in handling marine debris and to explore potential government partnerships within the food and agriculture sectors. ***
