Iran Reports Calm Security Situation Following Recent Unrest

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Iran’s current security situation is described as calm and peaceful, despite claims that external influence from Israel and the United States had turned initially peaceful protests into violent clashes that caused casualties.

“They (Israel and the U.S.) tried hard, but after several weeks, Alhamdulillah, the situation is now very calm, and peace has returned to the streets and across the country. We can see that internal protests have subsided, though external threats remain from the Zionist regime in Israel and also from the United States,” Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, said during an event in Central Jakarta on Monday, January 19, 2026.

He added, “We can say the situation is much better than before.”

Boroujerdi explained that the Iranian government has prepared several plans to manage domestic economic challenges, noting that economic issues were the main trigger of demonstrations that began on December 28, 2025.

“After the sharp depreciation of the currency, some business actors were concerned and wanted to stage peaceful demonstrations against the government. That was not a problem. The government now has several plans to stabilize the economy,” he said.

Regarding foreign nationals in Iran during the unrest, Boroujerdi assured that they remain safe, including Indonesian citizens, most of whom are students in Qom and Isfahan.

“From the beginning, I was concerned about my duty to ensure the safety of Indonesian civilians in Iran. I just received information confirming that they are all safe, and we are ready to assist them should anything happen. The same assurances apply to other foreign nationals as well.”

Boroujerdi emphasized that although conditions have improved, Iran is prepared to assist foreign governments wishing to evacuate their citizens. “At present, there are no problems in Iran, but whenever needed, we are ready to help governments evacuate their nationals,” he said.

He noted that the only foreign national affected was the Palestinian ambassador, whose residence was attacked by Mossad agents, leaving him slightly injured. “Other foreign nationals are fine,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRANA) reported that between 2,000 and 30,000 demonstrators were killed between December 28, 2025, and January 13, 2026. The group also estimated that 135 security personnel lost their lives during the protests. (Diffa Sephiawardhani/Sri Wahyuni)
